JOHN HULTBERG (1922 – 2005). Artist, oil paintings, abstract expressionist.
John Hultberg paintings range from his earlier abstract expressionist paintings to his later surrealist landscape paintings. John Hultberg paintings have been exhibited in many museums and group exhibitions (see list below).
John Hultberg was born in 1922 in Berkeley, California. Hultberg attended Fresno State College, graduating in 1943 prior to entering World War II, where he became a Navy lieutenant and served until 1946. After the war and with the assistance of the G.I. Bill, he attended the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute). His teachers at the California School of Fine Arts included Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still, and he was friends with Richard Diebenkorn, who was also a mentor. In 1948 James Budd Dixon, Walter Kuhlman, Frank Lobdell, and George Stillman produced a portfolio of 17 lithographs which has been acknowledged as a landmark in Abstract Expressionist printmaking, and the six artists became known as “The Sausalito Six.”
In 1949 Hultberg moved to New York City and attended the Art Students League until 1951. A frequent traveler, he traveled to Paris in 1954, and while living there, he received the Guggenheim Fellowship and continued to live in Europe until 1956. In 1956 Hultberg exhibited at the 6th Annual Exhibition at the Stable Gallery in New York. In 1963 Hultberg received the Ford Foundation fellowship to work at Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles. In 1963 John Hultberg and his wife and fellow artist Lynne Drexler would return to San Francisco and John would teach at the San Francisco Art Institute for a couple of years before traveling back east to live in Maine in 1971. Hultberg would frequently travel between Maine and New York and taught in New York City at Art Students League from 1990 until he died in 2005.
