Irene Pattinson studied at the Marion Hartwell School of Design, San Francisco State College, and the California School of Fine Art (CSFA). During the mid-20th century, the CSFA (later becoming the San Francisco Art Institute) became a nucleus for Abstract Expressionism, with faculty including Clyfford Still, Richard Diebenkorn, Mark Rothko, and David Park along with many notable students such as Joan Brown, Manuel Neri, Wally Hedrick, and William T. Wiley.

During the 1950s, Irene Pattinson was very active in the San Francisco art scene and was the President of the San Francisco Women Artists Association 1955-1956. She also won First Place awards at the San Francisco Woman Artists Association in 1957 and 1959, as well as an award at the San Francisco Art Festival in 1957.
